Conversion - Heavy Destroyer

As requested!  Here under are more pics and details about the first (I promise!) of many such Destroyer conversions.

Now as I've mentioned before, I'm not a fan of the GW Destroyer figure, it's dated and damn me if I haven't already painted several already.  Besides, I wanted something thematic with the armies Egyptian feel.

Inspired to make it more of another Cryptek construct, I grabbed some Tomb Kings snake knights from the Warhammer Fantasy range.

This with some left over bits from the Praetorian Stalkers and others from the bits box, I dove in with clippers and green stuff.

I loved the idea that this thing was usually worshipped or even camoflaged as what the lesser races would see as no more than statues and furniture.  Then, when activated it would come alive as a snake like construct designed to support Wraith and Spyders in the defence or support of the Dynasty.

As the doubles tournament coming up allowed me enough points to grab a Heavy Destroyer, I chopped up and one of the Heavy Gauss weapons from the Stalker.  The hardest part was the hands, as I'd already given the staff weapon blades to Rottimus for his Blood Angels special dudeses.

Eventually I noticed an over abundance of this strange part for the right arm which possessed a perfect ball joint.  When the Heavy Gauss was cut into, this worked as a perfect brace for the weapon.  But for the other arm's hand?  Everything seemed too small and fleshy.  What worked in the end?  I kid you not, Skaven.  Skaven hands from the Mordheim set.  Seriously, never throw out bits.

To tie in with the Dynasty's colour scheme I went with bone and red as a spot colour.  I played around with the green illumination for the first time with mixed success.  Sadly I was on a busy schedule.  Maybe next time?  I have plans for 1 more of these Heavy variants and then 4 standard.  Maybe I'll even get enough for a cult?

In hindsite, as Rottimus pointed out, the "emerging from the ground" base seems weird when one considers the way the slate and floor parts are angled.  THE WRONG WAY!!! >_<

Also, It did occur to me that in regards to the Dynasty's background, being ex Necron political prisoners, why then are the supposed Guards of said Prison (albeit converted to the cause) in the same bone and red convict colours?

Who knows, maybe Overlord Hautsi saw irony in repainting them?

Or wizards did it...

Moar Scenery!!

I forgot to blog about this, but a while back now (2 weeks?), my friend William and I went crazy on making cheap ass terrain.

After collecting all the washed tin cans, card, wood rod, more card, pollyfiller (Sparkle på norsk), even going so far as to butcher 1 of my Necron standing stones, we were ready.

This was really in a rush and on a budget!  We had 2 evenings for assembly and painting.  And by all that ain't holy, it was fun.

Highly recommended antics.

In the end we managed to assemble:

  • Maximum "Barricades" lengths as dictated from the Stronghold Assault expansion.
  • Maximum "Barbed Wire" lengths as dictated from the Stronghold Assault expansion.
  • A beautified crashed Aquila.
  • x3 Refinery pieces using the tin cans.
  • Extra ruin piece.
  • Some weird and exotic distillery that William felt like making (I love him but he is a bit mad...).
  • Fallen Necron stone piece.

The stuff was sprayed with any Primer we could lay our hands on and then lathered over with cheap acrylic paint from the local cheap shop.  Instead of buying inordinate amounts of GW or Army Painter pots, we mixed from these big packs to replicate the way I do my bases.  Dark brown, grey and finishing with a creamy light brown.  Washing and dry brushing on weathering tones really brought it together and Williams freehand of the aquila on one of the pieces was awesome.

Big note!  Seal in any polystyrene with paint and pva prior to priming with spray.  Or it melts.  No kidding.  Also, regarding sealing, seal in all Pollyfiller with watered PVA.  The filler can be very absorbing and it pays to coat it prior to painting.  It also prevents chipping from wear and tear later!

Sadly as we were on a tight schedule, there are no showy pics of the finished product.  Only of them in ACTION!!

Considering the price for these, I'm freaking happy with the results.  With 40k 7th edition being more about LOS than "Area Terrain" these really break up the shooty dominating effect of this edition.  In practice, I'm gonna need some "ignore cover" stuff.  Real soon.

The Road to Apocalypse - The Transcendent C'tan.

So, while I've been busy moving into our new home, I have been neglecting my Bloggy duties.  Forgive me fellow 'Cronsters, I have been weak.  In way of apology, please accept the following set of pics from the rush built Transcendent C'tan for an Apocolypse game about a month ago now.

I say rush build, not in a bad way, but in a decisive, ultra efficient way, that started out so simple and somehow just got drunk and added green stuff...  No-one said this was an exact science!

Now, back prior to the recent Codex Necrons 2015, the Transcendent C'tan was an upmodded variant on the C'tan, insanely powerful and easily argued as being OP (Overpowered).  Unfortunately, the release of the new 'Dex was on the day of the Apoc game, and as GW quite rightly noticed that they were undercutting their Tesseract Vault with this unit, they swapped things around.

Now the T-C'tan (some insist on calling it a Tranny C'tan?  Come now gentleman, have some decorum for 'Crons' sake.) is a kind of unnamed C'tan that ain't the Deceiver or the other Reapery one everyone goes for.  Incidentally they work damn well together.  Deceiver giving a debuff of -2 to enemy Ld in 12" which the Nightbringer (That's the one!) can use in his ranged attack to ruin enemy heavy armoured units.

But I digress.  I was inventing a C'tan.

Now I've been in love with the idea of using and abusing the Tomb Squinx kit from GW's Tomb Kings range for some time.  I got motivated to complete it for this Apoc game, but really got driven after discovering the lower torso from a sculpter called Rothand Studios (Click for link).

Designed more for making a Tomb Kings Heirophant for Warhammer Fantasy, it was still moulded perfectly to fit the upper torso of the plastic kit and gave me a base to work from.

As I kit bashed the thing together, I began imagining a back ground for it.  In the cannon, C'tan were bound first into being using Necrodermis to give the energy based entities a body to communicate with.  These were, at least in the earlier cannon, said to represent the Necrontyr's own gods (yet they look somewhat human facially, but I'm not judging!).  The C'tan, in the recent canon (Or fluff if you prefer!), were then defeated and rebound into weaker shards.

Using this, I loved the idea of that rib cage being like the rib cage of a typical Necron Warrior, the inside creature being made of stabilized raw energy.  In an odd after thought, I slapped a faceless plate on the C'tans face, arguably a mistake I'm not sure I like that addition, though I will probably come back to that and either extend it or remove the head and replace it entirely.

The C'tan itself is gigantic.  Well, it is double the size of the Night Bringer, but remember I was trying to do justice to the nastiest unit point for punishment in the Apoc expansion.  Still, a nice center piece, and using the Mephrit Dynasties' Artefact (God Collar?), I can really explain this size with enhanced statistics.

But then, this all ties into the emerging background of the Trazian dynasty.  They are collecting C'tan for some purpose, some ill intent that unnerves the other Dynasties.

But more on that later!  Muhahahhaa.

As usual, thanks for reading, and always feel free to comment below.
It makes my life interesting. :D
